Privatization of two major loss-making state-run entities-Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM)-is a step towards efficiency gains that means increase in GDP without economic growth. Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Regional Chairman and Vice President Ch Arfan Yousaf expressed these views while talking to members of the Lahore Economic Journalists Association (LEJA) at the FPCCI Regional Office.

He said privatization of two poorly performing state-owned entities (SoEs) were only burden on the state-money and it is appreciable decision on the part of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. Only the PIA losses are up to Rs 150 million, whereas the country's economy cannot afford loss making institutions, he added. Appreciating the Prime minister's positive approach, Arfan Yousaf said the PIA and the PSM had not only resulted in creation of huge financial liability on annual basis for the government but also enhance operation as well as financial performance of the entities by exposing them to market forces. The money could be used for education or to pursue other developmental objectives, he maintained.

Ch Arfan Yousaf announced that the FPCCI will organize youth conference soon. He said creating pathways for the economic empowerment and constructive engagement of young people through informed decision making, community mobilization, and skills development is our main focus.
